Cholesterol and DBCO are at both ends of the cholesterol-PEG-DBCO molecular chain, which is a reactive and lipopolic Cholesterol PEG. Cholesterol is linked to PEG by stable amide bonds. It can react with azide groups in aqueous solution by what is called copper-free Click chemistry. Cholesterol-PEG-DBCO has good water solubility and excellent reactivity, which can be used to produce liposomes to shorten the cycle time of encapsulated drugs. It can also be used in non-viral transfection reagents. It also has a protective effect on the oxidation of phospholipids.
