Synonyms: Maleimide-PEG-OH
MAL-PEG-OH has a maleimide and a hydroxyl group at each end of the molecular chain and is a linear heterofunctional PEG reagent. It is a useful cross-linking reagent with PEG spacer. The maleimide contains a reactive C=C double bond and is sensitive to light or oxygen. At pH 6.5~7.5, the maleimide groups can selectively react with thiol by means of Michael addition to form stable C-S bonds. In this way, MAL-PEG-OH can be used to modify proteins, peptides, or other surfaces containing sulfhydryl groups. The hydroxyl group can react with carboxylic acids. MAL-PEG-OH can also be used to synthesize PEGylated block copolymers such as PLA-PEG and PCL-PEG by initiating polymerization with lactic acid or caprolactone via the hydroxyl group.
