Pyrene-PEG-Amine, with an amino group and a pyrene group at each end of the molecular chain, is a fluorescent heterofunctional PEG derivative. Pyrene is a UV-excitable fluorescent dye with unique fluorescence properties, which has an exceptionally long excited state lifetime (>100 ns). This property makes it very useful in time-resolved fluorescence immunoassays. Pyrene-PEG-Amine enables the surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene through a strong (near irreversible) pi-pi stacking interaction between pyrene and the aromatic rings on single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Pyrene is conjugated to PEG through a very stable amide bond. PEG linker between pyrene and amine group offers better water solubility, less steric hindrance and enhanced stability.
