What is Bile Acid?
Bile acids (BA) are potent digestive surfactants that facilitate lipid absorption. Bile acids are now recognized as hormones involved in the regulation of various metabolic processes. Bile acids not only regulate their own synthesis and enterohepatic circulation, but also triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose and energy homeostasis. Current metabolomics and lipidomics studies aim to provide new insights into the mechanisms of bile acid signaling in the regulation of lipid metabolism and maintenance of lipid homeostasis.

Characteristics of Bile Acid
Digestive aid. Bile acid products can bind to fats during digestion and help emulsify and break down fats, making them easier to be broken down by gastric acid and gastric enzymes, thus promoting the absorption and utilization of fats.
Promote fat metabolism. Bile acids can affect fat metabolism and breakdown by regulating cholesterol synthesis and cholesterol metabolism pathways, thus having an impact on weight control and weight loss.
Bile acid replacement therapy. Certain diseases or conditions may result in insufficient or abnormal metabolism of bile acids, which may affect fat digestion and absorption. In such cases, bile acid products may be used as bile acid replacement therapy to help restore normal fat digestion and absorption function.
Bile Acid Analysis
Bile acids are synthesized in the liver and play an important role in cholesterol homeostasis, vitamin and lipid absorption, and a variety of key metabolic processes. BA analysis is an important area of research in a variety of settings, including clinical laboratories, as well as in ADME and toxicology studies. Abnormalities in BA biosynthesis and accumulation have been linked to a wide range of human diseases and mechanisms that cause hepatotoxicity, including drug-induced cholestasis.
Applications of Bile Acid
Drug Research for Primary Hyperlipidemia
Serum levels of total bile acids are positively correlated with triglyceride and cholesterol levels in patients with hyperlipidemia, and many hypertriglyceridemic patients have bile acid levels at high levels. The application of bile acid standards to analyze the distribution of bile acids in the plasma of patients with primary hyperlipidemia can provide a strong objective basis for the treatment and dietary adjustment of patients.
Drug Development for Gallstones
The bile acid molecule contains both hydrophilic groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl or sulfonic acid groups) and hydrophobic groups (methyl, heterocyclic), which can form complexing micelles with phospholipids and cholesterol in bile. However, when the bile acid content changes, the complex micelles become unstable and gallstones may form. Therefore, it is important to analyze the changes of bile acid type and content in living organisms with bile acid standards for the prevention and treatment of gallstones.
Drug Delivery System
Due to the special biocompatibility of bile acids and the solubility of bile acids, bile acids can be used as drug carriers or delivery systems to help improve the solubility, absorption and bioavailability of drugs.
