SC-PEG-SC is a bifunctional cross-linked PEG reagent with succinimide carbonate at both ends of the molecular chain, which is a kind of NHS-PEG-NHS ester reagent. Succinimide carbonate ester is a very active NHS ester. It can be bonded to PEG by carbonate bonds, which react with amines to form stable carbamate bonds between PEG and amine-containing molecules. SC-PEG-SC is usually biocompatible, non-toxic and stable in both organic and aqueous solutions, making them widely used in biological applications as well as nanotechnology and materials research. Proteins modified with PEG chains and compounds encapsulated in PEG liposomes have a longer half-life in vivo than their non-PEG counterparts.
